New Phone Woo!

Yesterday my two years was up so I headed down to the Verizon store and picked up a new phone, which I'm rather happy with already. It's an LG VX8600, which is a good mid-range phone. It's got most of the things you would expect on a new phone nowadays (bluetooth, polyphonic ringer, camera) but doesn't have too many unnecessary features (i.e. the camera isn't some crazy 3-megapixel thing). I also picked up a 1-Gig MicroSD card and the data cable for it, because before I bought it I made sure it worked with BitPim, this awesome piece of software that lets you manage your phone from your computer (Linux, Windows, or Mac!), including the contacts list and ringers. It was rather helpful when it came to transferring my contacts over, and I can do a rather simple trick that allows me to use any mp3 as a ringtone. Very awesome.

So, if you've got a 30-second mp3 that you want as your ringer, get it to me somehow and I'll put it on.

I renew in April and have been looking at phones. I'm tired of carrying my brick and now that I have a small digital camera I don't need the crazy phone.
Anyway I was looking at th LG8600, the Moto Krazr, and the Samsung SCH-u740 They're all slim phones.
Let me know how the sound quality and your general impressions of the phone are.

Having only had it a short time I'm quite happy with it so far. Sound quality I'll have to give a few more days because it's been mostly good but not perfect and I need to sort out the bad reception calls from the phone don't sound so good calls. I would definitely recommend it over any Motorola; even the Verizon store people don't hold Motorola phones in very high esteem for either call quality or battery life. No opinion on the Samsung other than that I considered it as well but ended up picking the 8600 (it looks so much nicer).

You have to go play with an 8600 in a store to appreciate how awesomely slim it is. It's also a bit different to hold compared to a bulky phone so you'll want to see how you feel about that.

Back with two questions.
1) Does the phone have a quick silence button? Can I put it into silence mode easily?

2) In the contacts, can I assign a ringtone for a group and then everyone added to the group will have said ringtone?

There's a new Samsung that just came out (u540) that's pretty slim and small. I went to the phone store yesterday to take a quick look at the phones.
It's basically between the u540 and the 8600. I'm still a little weary about the 540 because of the terrible sound quality my samsungs has now. I also like the fact that Bitpim recognizes just about everything in the 8600.

1) As near as I can tell, your two options for turning the ringer off are to press and hold the * key which sets it to vibrate or turn the volume down. Turning the volume down gives you vibrate, alarm, and no sounds (and of course varying degrees of volume control). There is also an airplane mode which shuts of all the RF functions but lets you keep the phone on, play games, etc.

In other words, there's no super convenient hold-this-button-when-the-phone-is-closed option, but it's not a huge hassle either.

2) Just trying it now I couldn't find the option. Looks like the only group-wise actions are to send message, pictures, or video.
